AIRMO GmbH is seeking an experienced LiDAR System Engineer in Berlin to develop and optimize LiDAR systems for greenhouse gas emission monitoring. The role requires strong expertise in optical modeling, simulation, and system integration, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to critical climate impact technology.

Job Description

AIRMO is a European climate-tech company using space and airborne technologies to monitor greenhouse gas emissions globally. Our instruments — combining LiDAR and hyperspectral imaging — detect and quantify methane and CO₂ emissions from industrial sites, pipelines, and national infrastructure. We’re building a global monitoring system from ground to space, helping energy companies, governments, and investors take real action on climate impact. We are seeking an experienced LiDAR System Engineer based in Berlin for an immediate start. Tasks Owns lidar performance modeling and processing: link budget, background (incl. spectral effects), detection chain, SNR. Defines lidar simulation truth models (aerosols, clouds) and processing approaches (filters, ranging, calibration). Interfaces with payload hardware teams on wavelength/trade studies and translates to measurable requirements. Key outputs: lidar simulator modules, SNR/coverage models, processing algorithms, performance validation results. Requirements Strong knowledge in optics with significant expertise in optical modelling and simulation, especially in the field of spectrometers and lasers over the spectral wavelengths range from Vis to IR Wide-ranging experience and advanced knowledge in interfaces and interactions between various aspects of optical systems incl. thermal, mechanical, electrical aspects and interfaces Experience with STOP analysis, sequential and non-sequential modes of ZEMAX OpticStudio. Experience building and operating optical benches with visible and NIR lasers, including implementation of laser safety, use of wavefront sensors and other optical instruments. Experience with lasers, APD, PIN and FPA detectors. 5-years+ experience in optical projects Benefits €1000 / yr development budget Tea, coffee, drinks, snacks in office Work with a killer team of motivated experts This is a rare chance to build real software that will fly beyond the edge of the atmosphere — and bring critical Earth-observation payloads to life. If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, write mission-critical code, and help shape the future of space-based instrumentation, we want to hear from you.
